Assessment and Treatment
STAR Center offers comprehensive assessment and treatment for clients and families living with the following conditions and challenges:
- Sensory Processing Disorder and its subtypes including:
- Sensory Modulation Disorder (over-responsivity, under-responsivity, sensory seeking)
- Sensory-Based Motor Disorder (dyspraxia and postural disorder)
- Sensory Discrimination Disorder (including Central Auditory Processing Disorder)
- Feeding challenges including food refusal, food sensitivities, fear of swallowing (phagophobia), difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), "failure to thrive," and others.
- Speech-language difficulties
- ADHD (attention deficit disorders)
- Autistic spectrum disorders
- Sensory-based learning difficulties
- Other developmental and behavioral issues
The STAR Center model is a "best-practices" approach to treatment. It is grounded in both research of the techniques that empirical studies have found most effective and clinical experience in what actually works. Our approach is practical and results-driven rather than ideological and process-driven, and it is always family-centered. We develop priorities for treatment in partnership with clients and families in a method that honors what families most need and desire from intervention, and we integrate parent education into every treatment plan.
LOCAL CLIENTS: Because research indicates that therapy is effective when delivered in "bursts" of treatment, we see local clients at least twice and almost always three times per week during treatment. Treatment programs average 20 to 30 sessions in length (10-15 weeks) and incorporate 5 hours of dedicated parent education. Breaks are built in to give the brain an opportunity to organize what it has recently learned. Follow-up booster sessions are offered for times when your child is facing a new developmental challenge or whenever your family wishes to enhance or reinforce the changes effected by earlier therapy.
OUT-OF-TOWN CLIENTS: Intensive Treatment for out-of-town clients provides the same, effective STAR Center model in a format adapted to the needs of families traveling to services. The same treatment "bursts," breaks, and parent education are delivered in a concentrated program designed to meet the needs of your child. Of the reports listed, the randomized controlled pilot study of the effectiveness of occupational therapy for children with sensory modulation disorder is of special signification because it is the first study of SPD treatment effectiveness conducted under the most rigorous scientific standards.
STAR Center is a primary sponsor of the Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) Foundation, the world's leading charity dedicated to SPD research, education, and advocacy. The Foundation maintains the largest and most comprehensive website about Sensory Processing Disorder on the worldwide web, offers an array of on-location and online learning opportunities for parents and professionals, and has spearheaded the initiative for diagnostic recognition of SPD in the 2012 revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V). The organization also conducts and mobilizes research into SPD, often in conjunction with STAR Center. Click here to learn about services and programs from the SPD Foundation.
