Assessment Services
STAR's comprehensive and ongoing assessment and evaluation services include:
Optional Telephone Screening, if needed, to determine whether differences in development are sufficient to warrant an Intake Evaluation
Intake evaluation, to review developmental history, presenting problems, and any previous testing conducted elsewhere
Comprehensive Assessment by one therapist, to obtain the information needed from standardized tests, detailed clinical observations, and parent-report measures to develop a personal treatment plan for you or your child. Members of our staff are certified to administer the 11 standardized scales developed by Lucy Jane Miller, PhD, OTR, founder and executive director of STAR, and many other test batteries (e.g., the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test [SIPT], the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency [BOT-2], and others) used to develop your custom treatment plan.
Multidisciplinary evaluation by a team of several sensory specialists, to evaluate the whole child by including assessment by professionals in multiple disciplines. The multidisciplinary team may include a pediatrician, a psychologist, an occupational therapist, a feeding specialist, a speech-language therapist, and/or others as indicated by the child's symptoms and the family's needs. Standardized testing as appropriate, detailed clinical observations, and parent-report measures are also used to provide findings with which the team develops a comprehensive, integrated treatment plan that addresses the specific needs of the client.
Extended Assessment and Treatment Consultation (A one-week option)
The extended assessment and treatment consult is a one-week process developed to take an in-depth look at a child to assist in either diagnosing and/or determining the services that would be useful in addressing the child's needs. This process can be completed with any level of evaluation depending on the child and family's wishes and needs. Once the evaluation sessions have been completed, the remainder of the week will be utilized to conduct preliminary treatment sessions so that the therapist can develop a working knowledge about the types of intervention options that appear to be most useful for follow up at home. At the end of the week, the therapist will provide a document summarizing their assessment findings and treatment recommendations.
The extended assessment and treatment consult option provides an opportunity for a professional assessment and enough consultation to determine the types of intervention most likely to meet a child's needs. Although the child does receive a few treatment sessions, this is not a replacement for longer-term intensive treatment. The treatment sessions are structured to elicit relevant diagnostic information and to help with home recommendations. Parents should not expect to see a huge change from just a few treatment sessions. However, you will be able to determine if your child would be likely to benefit from the type of intervention provided at STAR center and a few other places.
The extended assessment and treatment consult has been designed as an option for those who are unable to stay in Colorado for longer than a week and/or those who have excellent services where they live but want some expert short term consultation to bring home.
Feeding assessments, to evaluate infants, children, and adolescents with feeding and weight/growth difficulties
Assessment feedback, to discuss the client's strengths and challenges and the family's priorities for change. (Protocols differ slightly for local and out-of-town clients.)
Goal monitoring, to establish measurable goals before treatment starts and to monitor these goals throughout treatment to assure that progress is being attained
Post-testing, at the conclusion of treatment, to determine how much change has taken place during therapy
