Intensive treatment

Our intensive treatment program for long-distance clients is designed to make STAR's treatment program available to people who live out of town. All services provided to local clients during STAR Burst are provided to visiting clients.

Out-of-town treatment typically begins with a telephone intake evaluation after which your family travels to STAR. In the intensive program, comprehensive testing takes place on your first day at the clinic, and treatment typically begins the next day, continuing five days a week until completion.

Just like locals, out-of-town clients participate in 20-30 sessions of therapy interrupted by a break of several weeks. In a 20-session program, for instance, the family may have 12 sessions of therapy over a 2½-week period, return home for 3-4 weeks, then return for an additional 8 sessions during 1½ weeks. Occasionally, families come to STAR for a month without a break.

After completing the program, you are always welcome to return to STAR Center for booster sessions at subsequent developmental stages or to reinforce and/or to enhance the changes achieved during the initial intensive program.

Wherever you live, STAR will work closely with you to design a program that will fit the needs of you and your family.

Extended Assessment and Treatment Consultation (A one-week option)

The extended assessment and treatment consult is a one-week process developed to take an in-depth look at a child to assist in either diagnosing and/or determining the services that would be useful in addressing the child's needs. This process can be completed with any level of evaluation depending on the child and family's wishes and needs. Once the evaluation sessions have been completed, the remainder of the week will be utilized to conduct preliminary treatment sessions so that the therapist can develop a working knowledge about the types of intervention options that appear to be most useful for follow up at home. At the end of the week, the therapist will provide a document summarizing their assessment findings and treatment recommendations.

The extended assessment and treatment consult option provides an opportunity for a professional assessment and enough consultation to determine the types of intervention most likely to meet a child's needs. Although the child does receive a few treatment sessions, this is not a replacement for longer-term intensive treatment. The treatment sessions are structured to elicit relevant diagnostic information and to help with home recommendations. Parents should not expect to see a huge change from just a few treatment sessions. However, you will be able to determine if your child would be likely to benefit from the type of intervention provided at STAR center and a few other places.

The extended assessment and treatment consult has been designed as an option for those who are unable to stay in Colorado for longer than a week and/or those who have excellent services where they live but want some expert short term consultation to bring home.
