Services - SOS Feeding Solutions
SOS Feeding Solutions from STAR Center are provided by or under the direct supervision of Dr. Kay Toomey. Dr. Toomey is the developer of the SOS (Sequential-Oral-Sensory) Approach to Feeding Program used worldwide to treat feeding issues in infants, children, and adolescents.
SOS Feeding is a transdisciplinary program for assessing and treating children with feeding and weight/growth difficulties. Developed by Dr. Toomey over nearly two decades of work with problem feeders, the program incorporates principles and practices from multiple disciplines including pediatrics, occupational therapy, dietetics, and speech-language pathology.
Feeding Solutions at STAR Center integrates sensory, motor, oral, behavioral/learning, medical, and nutritional factors and approaches in order to comprehensively evaluate and manage children with feeding/growth problems. It is based on, and grounded philosophically in stages and skills of feeding found in typically developing children.
Services from SOS Feeding Solutions include:
- Transdisciplinary feeding assessments – two-hour comprehensive evaluation by an integrated team of five specialists with 2-hour feedback and education session for parents. Assessment makes sure that all physical reasons for atypical feeding development are examined and appropriately treated medically and that skills across all developmental areas are assessed with regards to feeding.
- Condensed evaluations – one-hour assessment with 1-2 members of the evaluation team followed by 30-minute discussion with parents.
- Individual feeding therapy – Food School for a single child and his/her parent(s). Based on the developmental steps found in typically developing children, individual therapy in Food School is based upon a systematic desensitization hierarchy of skills/behaviors necessary to progress with eating various textures and to grow at an appropriate rate.
- Group feeding therapy - Food School for groups of 4-6 children and their parents.
